I have always been interested in meditation for children so when I heard about this book, I bought 5 - one for each of my nieces and nephews. After I clicked on Place Order, I thought, "What if it's not any good?" Well, everything turned out really well because I, a great aunt, totally enjoyed reading about these 3 possums!! Honey, Felix, and Timber have 3 distinct personalities. After reading only a few chapters, I felt like I knew each one of them and loved going along on their adventures. The author has done a great job introducing and explaining the various meditations that each possum learns and tries. I know that my nieces and nephews will want to try what Honey, Felix, and Timber do - in hopes of traveling through time, too!! On a more serious note, I'm hoping they will think that the exercises are cool and see how useful they can be. It's a book that lends itself to talking about the meditations and practicing them with the child. The Magic Gum Tree: A Children's Fantasy Story About Meditation is also a great first book that opens itself up for all kinds of possiblilites for a series. I can't wait until the next book comes out!Product details

The Magic Gum Tree A Children Fantasy Story About Meditation Sarah Wood Vallely Denise Fulton 9780979330216 Books Reviews
The Magic Gum Tree not only brought my children and I together while reading the story, but led to conversations about meditation and how we can center ourselves during days when we are distracted and overwhelmed. The characters are so easy and fun to relate to, and our imaginations ran wild! Both of my children (ages 8 and 6) could read this on their own as well as enjoyed me reading it to them. Definitely great for the whole family! I even used one of the relaxation meditations for myself when nervous about having an MRI done. Sarah Vallely is a gifted writer and teacher and clearly desires to bring a positive message to children. We can't wait until the next one!
It's kind of like a Harry Potter tale only for younger kids -- maybe from kindergarten to third grade. But here's the thing. I can't think of another book out there that tells an adventure story while at the same time shows children the lessons and benefits of meditating. I recommended this book to three people in my yoga class who have children (or grandchildren). One told me her grandchild was fascinated with the story of the characters gaining powers and traveling through time. The other person said that after reading a chapter every night, her daughter wanted to try the calming methods that the characters had learned.
This book succeeds in two things introducing meditation concepts in a way that appeals to children and telling an engaging story. The book pays a loving homage to various spiritual wisdom traditions. Parents may use the story as a springboard to discuss concepts like mindfulness and to practice meditation techniques like breath awareness. While many books like this are prone to didacticism or neglecting story in favor of instruction, the author deftly avoids these traps with a richly textured, imaginative plot and well-drawn characters that will engage readers of many ages. At the end of each chapter my five year old urged me to read more. He cared about what was going to happen next to Honey, Timber & Felix on their adventure of discovery. We're looking forward to the next installment!
